Beginners Landscape Photography Course – A Photographer’s Dream

A Beginners Landscape Photography Course at Painshill Park, holds limitless possibilities for landscape and compositional photography, and is a photographer’s dream.  The Park comprises 158 acres of landscaped grounds, created in 1738 by Charles Hamilton, Earl of Abercorn, who wanted to give his guests the experience of a living landscape.  As they walked the landscaped grounds, guests would carry a picture frame, and would stop at designated places, hold up the picture frame, and view a living landscape.

Beginners Landscape Photography Course – limitless photo opportunities

The beauty of Painshill Park as a landscape venue cannot be overstated.   The park runs alongside the river Mole and includes a beautiful 19th century beam engine and waterwheel, an amphitheatre, a water meadow, an alpine valley, a number of follies and a spectacular grotto.  The park also contains many beautiful trees, including oak, yew, beech, silver birch and cedar trees, one of which is thought to be the largest cedar of Lebanon in Europe.  The photographic opportunities here are limitless.

Views of Painshill have been used on Wedgwood plates, and porcelain commissions by Catherine the Great of Russia.  Parts of Painshill were used for the TV series Trinity,  and for the film Dorian Gray in 2009.

Beginners Landscape Photography Course – Your Day

On this beginners landscape photography course, we will replace the picture frames with our digital cameras.  The day will begin with a chat regarding your knowledge and understanding of your camera.  We will ensure that you have a good understanding of your camera functions before we set off.

Beginners Landscape Photography Course – what you will learn

We will be concentrating on a number of photography concepts:

Working on maximizing your depth of field, through the aperture settings of the f numbers.

We will also be looking at where to place your focal point in the image, to encourage the viewer’s eye to wander through your image.

We will be concentrating on the importance of the rule of thirds to create stunning compositions.  We will be looking at horizons and their importance to the rule of thirds.  We will also be looking at how much foreground you should include in an image and the importance of the sky in bringing dramatic elements and feel to your image (see image above).

We will be looking at the importance of leading lines into your image to give it a sense of depth and scale.

We will be working on capturing movement, for example the wind in the trees, birds flying and even the movement of clouds.

Changing your viewpoint.  Sometimes taking landscapes very close to the ground can produce some very curious results.

Beginners Landscape Photography Course – Image Review

We will discuss what you see as an image before you take it. There will be a continuous review of your images throughout the day, via your camera’s LCD screen.  Later in the afternoon there will be a more thorough and in-depth review and critique of them on a laptop.  You will be shown how to process one of your images with adobe photoshop elements in both colour and black and white, to maximize dramatic effects of your images.
